Seattle Navy League was honored to sponsor several events in support of the USCGC Munro commissioning held on April 1, 2017 in Seattle.

On March 30, Admiral Butt, Tom Jaffa and Matt Miller presented to the crew, Plank Owner Plaques and certificates, commemorative coins as well as Sailor of the Quarter and Sailor of the Year recognition.

On March 31, before the commissioning, SNL hosted a special reception for 185 guests including U.S. Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Secretary John F. Kelly, Senator Sullivan of Alaska, Commandant of the Coast Guard Admiral Paul F. Zukunft.  The event was held at the beautiful World Trade Center Holland America Room and it was a beautiful sunny day where we could enjoy some time on the balcony! Matt Miller, President of Seattle Navy League and Co-chair of the Commissioning Committee was the emcee for the night.

Distinguished guests at the event include John F. Kelly, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security and his wife Karen, Senator Dan Sullivan from Alaska, Admiral Zukunft, the Commandant of the Coast Guard and his wife Fran, Vice Admiral Midgette, Commander Pacific Area and his wife Mary, Vice Admiral Parker, USCG Ret and his wife Tracey.  Also in attendance were James Hill, Canadian Consul General, Read Admiral Butt, Commander, 13th Coast Guard District, Rear Admiral Haycock, Assistant Commandant for Engineering and Logistics, Rear Admiral Sharp, USN (ret), Master Chief Cantrell, Master Chief Petty Officer of the USCG, Master Chief Lloyd, the sixth Master Chief Petty Officer of the USCG.  Master Chief Pearson, USCG Pacific Area Command Master Chief, Master Chief Isherwood, (ret), Mr. David Willis, Executive Director of the Seattle Sea Fair Foundation, Julie Sheehan, USCGC Munro Sponsor and the entire Sheehan family.  In addition, Captain King, Commanding Officer of the USCGC Munro, his XO, Command Master Chef and 15 members of the ship’s crew.  Finally there were many men and women in uniform at the event.

The Navy League representatives at the event included Tom Jaffa, National Vice President and Commissioning Co-Chair, Diane Jaffa, National Director, Mark Haller, National Director and other Navy League leadership and members were in attendance including members of the Northwest Region and Lake Merrit and Alameda Councils from California.

Key sponsors were recognized for their support of the commissioning with an honorary plank owner plaque and included: Ray Miller from Northrup Grumman; Bob Montgomery, Director of Maritime Programs, L3 Communications; Greg Murphy, Senior Automation Application Engineer from Mission Solutions/MTU America; Thomas Mogck, from ASRC, Program Director, Advanced Programs and Solutions; Bob Maixner, Director, Gun System, BAE Systems; Michael Reale, Director Marine Programs, Marine Operations, GE Aviation; and Paula Hartley, Lockheed Martin Vice President, Advanced Products Solutions.

Finally from our flagship sponsor, Huntingdon Ingalls, Brian Cuccia, Executive Vice President and President; and Ingalls Shipbuilding, Derek Murphy USCG Program Manager.  As the flagship sponsor, Huntingdon Ingalls provided the Navy League a level of support and much needed advice that helped make this commissioning celebration a true celebration!

We also recognized USCGC Munro’s Sailors of the Quarter including YN1 Maloney, OS1 Muentes, OS3 Dodd and MK2 Fahey.  Each were presented with a specially designed Douglas Munro Sailor of the Quarter Plaque to commemorate the commissioning.

On the day of the commissioning on April 1, Seattle Navy League hosted a breakfast for invited guests, Munro crew, and supporters before the event.  Participants were treated to excellent seats for the commissioning event.  Then we hosted boxed lunches which allowed the flexibility for attendees to take ship tours at various time frames.  In total Seattle Navy League hosted around 1000 meals! VIP tours were provided by the USCGC Munro for our guests and the crew did a great job!

March 2017 was certainly an exciting and busy time for Seattle Navy League and we were honored to participate in this great occasion! Special thanks to Diane Jaffa for her world class event coordination skills and hours of negotiation and preparation; Matt Miller and Tom Jaffa for their roles as Commissioning Chair and Co-Chairs, and energetic efforts and attention to detail in making the event a spectacular occasion.  Board Members Kyle Curtis and Jeff Davis did some heavy lifting behind the scenes with certificates, registration, accounting, etc.  Special thanks to Darlene Benevidez for her organizational, communication, leadership skills and ability to ramp up on many complex registration processes involved with these events.  And as always Ken Schoeni was cheerfully ready to jump in and do whatever was needed to support and promote the event.  It was a great team effort and a success because of all the team!
